- French police catch casino fraudsters with mini-headphones
French investigators have arrested two casino cheats in the Paris suburb of Enghien-les-Bains, allegedly swindling tens of thousands of euros each evening using a sophisticated technique. To apprehend the men, investigators first installed an elaborate surveillance system in the casino, France Info reported, citing police. This allowed them to observe one of the suspects using a tiny earpiece at the poker table, so small that a magnet had to be used to remove it.
Through the earpiece, the suspect received instructions from an accomplice sitting in a car outside the casino. The accomplice used images from the suspect's phone camera at the poker table. The special camera was installed sideways in the phone and filmed the croupier dealing the cards in a wide angle. The cheat had seemingly carelessly placed his phone on the poker table.
During a search of the duo's car and hotel rooms, police found numerous access cards for casinos across Europe. This case "must allow casinos to take measures to prevent this type of fraud from happening again by implementing the necessary precautions," a participating investigator told the station.
The accomplice outside the casino relied on the tiny earpiece to provide instructions to the suspect at the poker table, contributing to their alleged fraudulent activities. Due to this incident, other casinos should consider implementing stricter measures to prevent such instances of fraud, as suggested by the investigator.
