Emergency drill for aircraft collision: Airport rehearses emergency situation
An emergency operation will be rehearsed at Cologne/Bonn Airport on Saturday (9.30 a.m.) for training purposes. This will simulate the collision of two aircraft that catch fire. Around 350 people will take part in the exercise. Among them are fire department personnel who implement emergency plans and rescue passengers and crew members from the aircraft. The exercise also involves actors in make-up who are treated by rescuers. The exercise takes place in an area where airplanes are normally parked.
Cologne/Bonn Airport explained that the exercise would result in an increased number of emergency vehicles with flashing blue lights and sirens in the morning. "Flight operations will not be affected by the exercise," explained the airport. In addition to the airport, the fire departments of the German Armed Forces and the City of Cologne as well as the state and federal police are also involved. Commercial airports must regularly complete emergency drills. The last time this was the case at Cologne/Bonn was in 2021.
During the exercise, the simulation of an aircraft accident involving fires will require traffic management to divert emergency vehicles to the scene. Despite the increased traffic of emergency vehicles, regular flight operations will continue without disruption.
