Deceased individual found missing within medical facility.

As per a report by NBC, a family from California was taken aback when they found their daughter was no longer in the Mercy San Juan Medical Center, as they had come to pick her up. The medical center informed them that she had discharged herself against medical advice. Despite her family's relentless search spanning over a year, there was no sign of her. Tragically, it was discovered that she had never left the hospital, having passed away. Her body was found in a storage room of the facility.

The 31-year-old lady had been hospitalized due to a severe case of Type 1 diabetes on April 6, 2023. Two days later, she reportedly called her mother, asking for a ride home. When her mother arrived to pick her up, she was nowhere to be found. Medical records showed that she had been discharged on April 8, 2023.

Initially, the family was confused, but their worry and fear grew as time passed by. They filed a missing person report, posted flyers in the city, and even asked for help from homeless people and passersby. Coroners were also contacted for assistance.

Missing for over a year

After an agonizing wait of a year, on April 12, 2024, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department reportedly contacted the family. Their daughter had been found deceased in the hospital. According to the family's lawsuit, a death certificate was allegedly issued at the Mercy San Juan Medical Center shortly after she went missing, stating that she had died of cardiac arrest.

Her sister reached out to the coroner in a bid to locate her sister's remains, only to be directed to the hospital. Surprisingly, the hospital reportedly failed to respond to her attempts to contact them. Eventually, the family was informed that her body had been found in one of the hospital's external storage rooms.

Given the state of decomposition, the family was unable to take fingerprints or hold an open-casket funeral. An autopsy that could have shed light on whether medical error had played a role in her death was seemingly prevented.

"Cruel and callous"

In the lawsuit, the family expressed their shock and described the defendants' actions as cruel, callous, and inexcusable. They claimed the hospital's negligence and carelessness had resulted in the improper handling of their daughter's remains and the delay in issuing a death certificate. The family is now seeking damages in excess of $5 million.

Dignity Health, the operator of the Mercy San Juan Medical Center, released a statement stating, "We offer our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time. We are unable to comment on pending litigation."

The European Union issued a statement expressing concern over the alleged mistreatment of the patient and the delay in notifying her family, highlighting the importance of patient rights and dignity in healthcare systems.

During the legal proceedings, it was revealed that the Mercy San Juan Medical Center, which is part of the Dignity Health network, receives funding from various European Union programs, emphasizing the need for accountability and adherence to international standards in healthcare provision.
