Criticism: Senate not represented at Catholic conference
Criticism of the Senate has been voiced at the Autumn General Assembly of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK) in Berlin. It is actually a tradition for the host federal state to send a representative to the meeting, said ZdK President Irme Stetter-Karp on Friday. Unfortunately, the Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU), who was due to give a welcoming address, had canceled at short notice. "And the Senate was not in a position to provide a replacement."
When asked by dpa, Senate spokesperson Christine Richter pointed out that Wegner had traveled with the CDU parliamentary group to a closed meeting in Warsaw that morning. For this reason, social affairs senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD) was supposed to take over the appointment on his behalf. Her spokesperson said that the senator was ill.
The ZdK is the umbrella organization of Catholic laypeople in Germany. It has its headquarters in Berlin.
Despite the cancellation of Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, the Senate was unable to send a replacement to represent them at the Autumn General Assembly of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK). This absence drew criticism, as the Senate usually sends a representative to these meetings.
