Ciao heat - summer goes to the exchange station

The summer is pausing - and bringing unusual stormy weather for Germany in the coming week. Temperatures are expected to drop by more than 15 degrees in parts. It won't get much warmer again until the weekend. However, stable summer weather is not yet in sight.

After the hottest day of the year so far - with temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius in the Bavarian Kitzingen on the past Saturday - the low pressure system "Annelie" brought an abrupt end to the first summer intermezzo in the western half of Germany, especially during the EM-match of the German team against Denmark in Dortmund, with heavy and intense thunderstorms.

The southeastern part of Germany, from Upper Bavaria to Sachsen and Berlin, experienced another tropical night with minimum temperatures not dropping below 20 degrees. The warmest place was Coswig in Sachsen with a minimum temperature of 23.8 degrees. Meanwhile, the last remnants of summer air are still hanging on in the eastern half, where stronger thunderstorms are still possible.

From Monday to Wednesday, it will be hot and a very weak and turbulent westerly wind will bring a mix of sunshine and strong rain showers, as well as occasional thunderstorms. The temperatures will drop to 16 to 23 degrees.

On Thursday and Friday, a strong storm system, with its center located north of Scotland, is expected to bring rough conditions. It will be very windy at the coast and on mountains, with storms also expected in the northern half. However, with every kilometer towards the Alps, there will be more sunshine and fewer showers. The temperatures will remain summer-like with 17 to 23 degrees.

The weekend: Sunday will be the better day

Despite being in July, it's hard to tell - at least when looking at the weather maps on Saturday. The start of the weekend brings widespread rain and thunderstorms with extremely low precipitation of 17 to 23 degrees. Sunday will be more pleasant in the south and east, where temperatures will rise noticeably and reach up to 27 degrees. In the west and north, the feeling will be refreshing with 17 to 23 degrees.

Monday to Wednesday: April-like weather with some thunderstorms

It will be changeable and rather showery with occasional thunderstorms. Fortunately, the risk of heavy rain has decreased. The nights will also be less sweaty, which is reflected in the daily maximum temperatures. They will not exceed 16 to 23 degrees.

Thursday and Friday: Partly rough conditions with storms

The Scottish low pressure system, which forecasts a core pressure of 985 hectopascals, more reminiscent of autumn than summer, sends us a few rough greetings. It will be very windy at the coast and on mountains, with storms also expected in the northern half. Furthermore, there will be more rain and thunderstorms in the northern half, while the sun and fewer showers are expected with every kilometer towards the Alps. The temperatures will remain summer-like with 17 to 23 degrees.

Despite the unusual weather patterns, the upcoming International Olympics could still be held as planned, given that meteorological forecasts suggest improvement in the second half of the week. However, it's advised to prepare for potential weather disruptions, such as heavy rain or thunderstorms.

Given the international scope of the event, weather predictions and contingency plans from various parts of the world need to be taken into consideration to ensure a smooth and safe competition for all participants.
