Bernie Sanders to run for re-election in his Senate position
At 82, the progressive senator from Vermont, who aligns with the Democrats, is the 2nd oldest senator. If reelected, he'd be in his late eighties by the end of a possible 4th term.
In a statement, Sanders said, "We must work to ensure our country remains a democracy and not become an authoritarian society. Our government needs to represent the working families, not the richer billionaires and big campaign donors."
The Senate Democrats are battling tough terrain in this election cycle, mainly on defense over several competitive seats that could flip control of the chamber to the Republicans. Additionally, Sanders has been vocal about the upcoming 2024 presidential election, repeatedly expressing concerns over former President Donald Trump's potential reelection.
While these issues weigh on the minds of Democrats, Sanders focused on a key distinction with President Biden: US involvement in the conflict in Gaza.
"Israel had the right to defend itself in that recent terrorist attack, but they don't have the right to go to war against the entire Palestinian people - exactly what they're doing," Sanders claimed. "I believe that American taxpayers' money should not be used to fund the extreme Netanyahu government's devastation against the Palestinian people."
After 16 years in the House, Sanders is wrapping up his 3rd Senate term. This sets a record as the longest-serving independent member in the history of Congress.
