- Balcony collapsed, six people injured

In the collapse of a balcony, six people were injured in Hamburg. One person was severely injured, two others were moderately injured, and three were lightly injured, as the fire department reported. Whether the severely injured person suffered life-threatening injuries, as previously reported, was unclear on Thursday morning.

The accident in the Langenhorn district occurred on Wednesday evening shortly after 9:30 PM. How it happened is still completely unclear.

Balcony collapsed downwards

The balcony was attached to the third floor of a multi-family house from the 1960s or 1970s. It was not fully supported from below, but rather collapsed forward at a 90-degree angle. According to the fire department, it is still hanging on the facade of the building. They decided not to remove it during the night, but rather to do so during the day on Thursday or in the coming days.

All six people on the balcony, five men and one woman, fell from approximately nine meters. They were taken to the hospital. The apartments on the affected side of the house were evacuated, the firefighter said. Structural engineers must now check how to proceed. The fire department was on site together with the rescue service and the Technical Relief Agency (THW) with 60 personnel.

Despite the efforts of the rescue services, the exact cause of the balcony's collapse remains other than clarity.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and other factors, such as structural weaknesses or external influences, are being considered as potential causes.
