Arrest on suspicion of RAF at Berlin-Spandau railway station

In Berlin-Spandau, a passenger in an ICE train reported recognizing a fugitive former RAF terrorist on Tuesday evening, leading to an arrest. Authorities have not yet identified which of the wanted individuals the suspect might be.

A person was provisionally arrested at Spandau station in connection with the search for two former RAF terrorists. The operation on Tuesday was carried out jointly with the Federal Police following a tip from the public, a spokesperson for the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) said. The identity of the suspect is currently being verified, but the spokesperson could not provide a timeline for this process.

According to a report by Bild newspaper, the tipster claimed to have recognized the man, who was sitting in an ICE train, as Ernst-Volker Staub. Later, the name Burkhard Garweg was mentioned. The LKA spokesperson only stated that the arrest was in connection with the search for Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub.

The Federal Police Directorate in Berlin confirmed that a man was provisionally arrested following a person check on Tuesday around 9:00 PM. He is currently in custody in Berlin, a spokesperson said.

The public prosecutor's office in Verden has been investigating the former RAF terrorists Staub, Daniela Klette, and Garweg since 2015 for attempted murder and attempted and completed severe robbery in several cases. Klette was arrested in Berlin-Kreuzberg at the end of February. The police, led by the LKA in Lower Saxony, had been searching for her for decades. The search for Staub and Garweg continues. They belonged to the so-called third generation of the left-wing extremist Red Army Faction (RAF). In 1998, the RAF, which had killed more than 30 people, declared itself dissolved.

The individual in question was being sought by authorities due to their association with the former RAF terrorists, specifically Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub, both of whom are under investigation by the public prosecutor's office in Verden. The arrest took place within the jurisdiction of the European Union, specifically in Germany.
