After spending a year behind bars in Mallorca, German individual was granted freedom.
Around twelve months ago, Spanish authorities captured a group of young German males on Mallorca. They are under scrutiny for allegedly raping an 18-year-old. Recently, these men from North Rhine-Westphalia have been granted temporary liberty from remand detention. The investigation remains ongoing.
As per reports from a trusted source in Palma, the five Germans, now accused of coerced sexual activities or passive observation, were granted bail after being in pre-trial detention for over a year on the island of Mallorca. Initial reasons and details for their release remained undisclosed.
The circumstances involve an 18-year-old holidaymaker from Germany, whom one of the suspects had previously met at the renowned Ballermann beach. According to law enforcement, one of the accused recorded the incident using his smartphone in July 2023.
The five males, aged between 21 and 23, who were initially detained for suspicion of gang rape, hail from Märkischer Kreis, Sauerland in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Hagen Public Prosecutor's Office in Germany has pledged to continue its inquiry against the five suspects.
Among the accused, one of them was granted release shortly after detention. He was able to convincingly demonstrate his innocence with regard to the alleged rape. As reported by the "Mallorca Zeitung", a sixth suspect was granted bail of 10,000 euros in September.
The freedom granted to all suspects does not imply the case's closure. The investigation will proceed based on the present facts. A conviction in Spain could result in prison sentences ranging up to 12 years.
The granting of temporary liberty for one of the suspects raised questions about the allegation of rape against them. Despite being released, the investigation into the case continues to gain momentum.
