Thunderstorms and heavy rain caused disruptions in traffic in the northern regions. In Nordfriesland, a lightning strike at a railroad crossing caused delays in train traffic. At the Hamburg-East interchange, there was considerable chaos due to heavy rain on the road, according to a spokesperson in Lübeck. No major accidents were reported.

In the Hanseatic city itself, the rainfall remained within limits, according to the Fire Department's situation report. Some streets and garage entrances were reportedly underwater.

The German Weather Service (DWD) issued severe weather warnings for Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Lower Saxony. Locally, heavy thunderstorms with strong gusts, heavy rain of up to 40 liters per square meter within a short time, and hail could occur, it was reported. Later, the warnings in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein were lifted.

Lightning strikes railroad crossing in Nordfriesland

Trains had to pass through a railroad crossing between Niebułł and Klanxbułł (Nordfriesland) at reduced speed after a lightning strike. There were delays, according to a railway spokesperson. The damage was quickly repaired.

The thunderstorm line was moving westward according to a DWD meteorologist and was expected to leave Schleswig-Holstein and the North Sea coast in the evening hours, with clear skies and the evening sun already appearing in Nordfriesland.

DWD: Wednesday will be friendlier in the North

Wednesday is expected to be friendly in the North. According to a DWD expert, the highest temperatures will reach up to 22 degrees. It may be cooler along the coasts. In general, it is expected to be dry, but with a northwesterly wind.
