Noteworthy development for upcoming "Star Trek" television program. - Actor Paul Giamatti confirmed for the project.

The upcoming "Star Trek" series "Starfleet Academy" is making waves with its latest casting announcement. According to "Variety," Paramount+ has confirmed that Oscar-nominated actor Paul Giamatti (57) will be a part of this new production. Giamatti, who was recently nominated for an Academy Award for "The Holdovers," is the second big name added to the sci-fi series following Oscar winner Holly Hunter (66).

Giamatti's Role in the New Series

In "Starfleet Academy," Giamatti will take on the role of the show's main antagonist. The character, whose name has not been revealed yet, has a shady connection with one of the series' cadets.

"Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," produced by showrunners Alex Kurtzman (50) and Noga Landau, is set in the 32nd century and takes the franchise to a whole new level. The production is scheduled to start shooting soon and focuses on a group of young cadets who are not only receiving training to become Starfleet officers but also going through typical coming-of-age experiences like friendship and their first love.

The show is geared towards a younger audience, often referred to as young adults. As of now, it's unknown who will be selected to portray the main characters of the series. Hunter, a two-time Oscar winner, is playing a lead role as the Starfleet Academy's chancellor.

Kurtzman and Landau commented on Giamatti's addition to the cast, saying, "Sometimes you get fortunate enough to find out one of the greatest actors around is also a huge 'Star Trek' fan." Giamatti himself had expressed his desire to join the franchise back in 2011, stating, "I'd really love to play a Klingon. Damn, I'll never be able to play a Klingon?" He further discussed his interest in appearing in a science fiction project and playing a Klingon or something similar during an interview with Stephen Colbert (60) in 2019.
