Zelensky: Ukraine receives first F-16 fighter jets
"It's finally a reality. A reality in our skies. F-16s in Ukraine," said Selenskyj at a ceremony held at a secret location. He did not provide details on the number of combat jets supplied by the West, only stating that it was "insufficient." Ukraine needs more F-16 aircraft, he added, noting that "additional F-16s are expected."
Ukraine has been pressing its allies for the delivery of F-16s since the start of Russia's invasion in February 2022, aiming to break Moscow's air superiority and better protect its cities. In a May interview with news agency AFP, Selenskyj said his country needed around 130 F-16 jets in total to achieve parity with Russia's air force.
The European Union, along with other Western allies, has been a key source of support for Ukraine, providing military aid to help counter Russia's invasion. Ukraine's President Zelenskyj has repeatedly expressed his desire for F-16s from the European Union, stating that additional F-16s are expected.
