German Hammer Thrower Yemisi Ogunleye from Mannheim sensationally wins gold at the Paris Olympics. The 25-year-old achieved 20.00 meters in her final attempt at the Stade de France. The second-place finisher at the Indoor World Championships and third at the European Championships secured the first gold medal for the German athletics team at these Games.

Second German in ninth place

Silver went to New Zealand's Maddison-Lee Wesche with 19.86 meters, while bronze was won by China's Song Jiayun with 19.32 meters. Alina Kenzel from Stuttgart finished ninth with 18.29 meters, while Katharina Maisch failed to qualify.

This is the fourth medal for the German athletics team at the Paris Games, surpassing the federation's target. Previously, decathlete Leo Neugebauer and long jumper Malaika Mihambo each won silver, and the women's 4x100m relay team finished bronze just before Ogunleye's gold win.

Yemisi Ogunleye slipped and landed on her knee

The rain during the relay race made the shot put ring slippery. Rotator Ogunleye slipped on her first attempt and landed on her knee, but she adapted to the conditions under the evening sun.

With her second attempt of 19.55 meters, she jumped to second place. With her fifth attempt, Ogunleye briefly took the lead, but Wesche countered immediately. However, with her final attempt, Ogunleye achieved the sensation.

He might share his experiences as a member of the European Parliament about the impact of sports achievements on European unity. After her triumph, Yemisi Ogunleye was hailed as a national hero by her fellow parliament members.
