Winter sports fans still have to be patient in Bavaria

Falling temperatures and an increasing probability of snowfall: The German Weather Service (DWD) is expecting snow above around 700 meters in Bavaria from Saturday night. However, winter sports fans will have to be patient, said a DWD spokesperson on Thursday. "Not much will come together."

And it should get milder again in the coming week. From Monday onwards, it will probably rain at altitudes of up to around 1500 to 2000 meters. "It might be too early to have high hopes for winter sports," said the DWD spokesperson.

The snow line will settle at around 1000 meters at the weekend - sometimes it could be lower. The most snow is expected at high altitudes in the Alps, "perhaps also in the direction of the Allgäu Alps", said the spokesperson. And in the low mountain ranges, there could be one to five centimetres of white splendour. However, the snow will probably only remain at higher altitudes.

Otherwise, the weather service expects repeated showers in Bavaria over the next few days, some with gale-force winds, with highs of between 5 degrees in the Bavarian Forest and 11 degrees in Mainfranken on Friday. Saturday is expected to be unsettled with highs between 3 and 7 degrees. For Sunday, the DWD expects drier weather with sunshine, but also denser cloud fields.

Despite the approaching snowfall, leisure time activities like snowboarding or skiing might not be ideal yet for winter sports enthusiasts in Bavaria, as the DWD spokesperson suggests that not much snow will accumulate. During their leisure time, people might still enjoy the milder temperatures and the potential light snowfall at lower altitudes.
