What is the tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, known for, currently unaccounted for following the sinking of a luxury yacht?
Lynch accumulated a significant portion of his fortune through the establishment of Autonomy, a tech company, which HP bought for an astounding $11 billion in 2011. A lawyer representing Lynch recently disclosed that the entrepreneur's net worth is approximately $450 million.
The Autonomy deal ranked as one of the largest tech transactions in Britain at the time, but it quickly turned sour. Within a year, HP reduced Autonomy's value by an astonishing $8.8 billion. The acquisition was intended to boost HP's software sector, but instead, it was mired in legal controversies that culminated in a fraud trial.
Prosecutors accused Lynch and Autonomy's former finance director, Stephen Chamberlain, of orchestrating a plan to artificially inflate Autonomy's income before selling it to HP. Recently, in a San Francisco court, Lynch was cleared of 15 allegations - one charge of conspiracy and 14 counts of wire fraud.
The verdict caught Lynch off guard. "Hearing that answer, you leap into a different universe. If things had gone awry, it would have meant the end of my life as I knew it in every sense," he told the Times, a UK newspaper.
Established in 1996, Autonomy soared to become Britain's leading software company and a prominent member of the FTSE 100 index. At the time, Lynch was praised by scholars and scientists and was invited to advise the British government on technology and innovation.
The yacht Lynch was aboard, the Bayesian, shares a connection with his wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the saved. Maritime records held by Equasis indicate that the 56-meter vessel is owned by Revtom Limited, an Isle of Man-registered company belonging to his wife.
Fifteen individuals were saved from the scene. A child was airlifted to a children's hospital in Palermo, and a total of eight people were hospitalized, according to the mayor's office. The Coast Guard reported finding a body on the boat's hull.
