In fact, it's not necessary to host a noisy party to be accused of disturbing public order by the police. Even if the noise is much less, neighbors may still complain. Therefore, it's important to be aware of what not to do during nighttime.

Here are the actions prohibited in Germany after 10 p.m.

From Monday to Saturday in Germany, there is a regulation for night rest from 22:00 to 6:00. During this period, making noise is not allowed.

  • A washing machine can be quite loud during the spin cycle. Some devices can produce noise up to 77 decibels. Therefore, it's better to refrain from doing laundry at night.
  • Depending on the modernity of the dishwasher, it can also be quite noisy. The noise from the device typically ranges from 37 decibels to 50 decibels.
  • Depending on the type of drill and the surface being worked on, drilling into a wall can reach up to 150 decibels. Similarly, other manual activities like hammering nails are not allowed.
  • A vacuum cleaner can be very loud, cleaning the house with a noise level of up to 90 decibels. Even very quiet vacuum cleaners can operate at around 65 decibels. It's advisable to keep them turned off as they can be genuinely irritating to neighbors during the night.

Probably not many people would think of mowing the lawn at night. Something can definitely go wrong in the dark.

  • The noise level of lawnmowers ranges from 78 to 96 decibels, which is roughly as loud as an idling truck.

Not everything that can make noise at night falls under a violation. Therefore, flushing the toilet or taking a shower is within the bounds of the law. This is not because these activities are less noisy.

  • For instance, the noise during showering and flushing ranges from 20 to 30 decibels.

The reason is that these are hygiene and personal necessity activities. No German law prohibits anyone from doing this.

After 10 p.m., operating a loud washing machine, dishwasher, drill, or vacuum cleaner is prohibited in Germany due to noise regulations. For instance, a washing machine can produce up to 77 decibels during the spin cycle, while a vacuum cleaner can reach up to 90 decibels.

During the night, the noise level of lawnmowers, ranging from 78 to 96 decibels, is also prohibited, resembling the noise of an idling truck. However, hygiene and personal necessity activities, such as flushing the toilet or taking a shower, which produce noise levels of 20 to 30 decibels, are not restricted by these regulations.
