Warner Bros. Discovery taps former Obama press secretary Robert Gibbs for PR leadership role.

Robert Gibbs, known for his years in public relations in the private sector following his time at the White House, is stepping into a challenging role at Warner Bros. Discovery, which is currently grappling with a turbulent media industry. With WBD's stocks (WBD) hitting rock bottom and the media landscape shifting rapidly, it's a tough time for all players, including Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the company behind CNN, has seen some brief victories such as the success of "Barbie" and its TNT sports division. Yet, like its competitors, it's faced a significant challenge this year, compelling people to stay away from cinemas. Television ratings and cable subscriptions are also on a steady decline. Furthermore, Warner Bros. Discovery seems to be missing out on key opportunities, as reported, in the renewal of its expensive yet lucrative NBA package.

It's not Gibbs' responsibility to solve Warner Bros. Discovery's issues that are plaguing the media industry along with its rivals. However, the company has struggled to communicate its strategy and story effectively to its fans, especially during times when it's canceling expensive programs, reducing resources, and rehauling the DC Entertainment brand.

In a memo to the staff, CEO David Zaslav praised Gibbs' ability to develop powerful communication and public affairs strategies, stating that he will be a valuable addition to WBD as they focus on enhancing their internal culture, strengthening consumer and partner connections, and fostering innovation across their businesses.

Zaslav highlighted Gibbs' success in positioning companies for success during transformative periods, deeming him the ideal choice for this role.

Gibbs previously served as communications director for President Barack Obama's 2004 Senate campaign and 2008 presidential campaign, later becoming Obama's first White House press secretary. He recently worked as a partner at the consultancy Bully Pulpit International. Prior to that, he served as McDonald's chief communications officer.

Gibbs is set to replace Katie Martin Kelly and Laura Watson, who've been working as interim communications directors since January, following the resignation of Nathaniel Brown, the former communications director. Gibbs is expected to start on August 5.
