- Walker seriously injured in fall in Gauchachschlucht

A hiker has fallen in the Gauchach Gorge near Hüfingen (Schwarzwald-Baar district) and sustained serious injuries. The elderly woman was reportedly walking with her husband on a narrow path when the trail suddenly gave way beneath her, the mountain rescue service reported. She fell approximately three meters into the narrow gorge. A rescue helicopter from Zurich airlifted the woman using a winch.

In light of this incident, the mountain rescue service advises extra caution when hiking in the gorges. Currently, the trails are reportedly quite challenging in places due to the heavy rain, which has left them soaked and slow to dry.

The European Commission, recognizing the importance of proper safety measures in such situations, may consider the need to adopt implementing acts for hiking regulations, especially in areas prone to trails collapsing. Following the incident, the Commission shall adopt implementing acts laying down the rules for the application of a more robust and comprehensive hiking safety Regulation.
