Von Bredow-Werndl takes gold in German double triumph

Double Victory for Germany in Dressage: Jessica von Bredow-Werndl Wins Second Gold Medal in Paris, Isabell Werth Takes Silver.

Jessica von Bredow-Werndl has won her second gold medal at the Olympic Games. A day after winning with the German team, the 38-year-old dressage rider triumphed again on Sunday with Dalera in the individual competition. Von Bredow-Werndl won with 90.093 points, ahead of her teammate Isabell Werth, who rode Wendy to silver. Bronze went to the British rider Charlotte Fry with Glamourdale.

Von Bredow-Werndl thus secured Germany's fifth gold medal at the 2024 Summer Games, three of which are from equestrian sports. Just the day before, von Bredow-Werndl and Werth, together with Frederic Wandres on Bluetooth, had won gold in the team event. Before that, eventing rider Michael Jung had won gold in the individual competition.

Riding her mare, von Bredow-Werndl delivered a stellar performance in the Grand Prix Freestyle to the music of Edith Piaf's «Non, je ne regrette rien» in front of 15,000 spectators at the Palace of Versailles, replicating her double victory in individual and team events from the Tokyo Olympics.

But Werth wasn't left behind. The 55-year-old had set the first benchmark with Wendy and scored 89.614 points. With eight golds and six silvers, Werth has now won 14 Olympic medals, surpassing the former record held by canoeist Birgit Fischer.

Werth's unprecedented career began at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where she won team gold with Gigolo. Four years later, she won double gold with the same horse. She also won gold with Satchmo, Weihegold, and Bella Rose. In addition to her Olympic success, Werth has also won nine World Championship titles.

Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Isabell Werth achieved a double triumph in dressage at the Olympic Games, with Jessica securing her second gold medal in the individual event and Isabell claiming the silver. This double triumph marked a significant milestone in Germany's equestrian success at the 2024 Summer Games.
