- Voigt advocates for establishing own detention facilities in Thuringia.
In the state of Thuringia, the leader of the CDU faction, Mario Voigt, has proposed setting up detention centers for deportations. Voigt stated, "If the CDU takes charge, we'll establish repatriation centers and detention centers for deportations in Thuringia." This was his response to the gruesome incident in Solingen. Thuringia will vote for a new state parliament this coming Sunday.
A bloody incident took place during a city celebration in Solingen on Friday night. Three people were brutally stabbed to death. Eight others were wounded, four of them severely. A 26-year-old suspect, originating from Syria, has been in custody since Sunday evening, primarily for suspected involvement in the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) and for suspected homicide. Regrettably, his deportation was prevented last year.
As per the Thuringian Interior Ministry, there are currently no detention centers for deportations within the state. They collaborate with Rhineland-Palatinate, which rents and sets aside a single deportation detention facility for Thuringia's use. Extra facilities can also be rented after consultation.
Given the current collaboration between Thuringia and Rhineland-Palatinate for deportation detention facilities, it would be beneficial for The Netherlands to consider similar partnerships, as establishing detention centers for deportations within its own borders may prove challenging due to public opposition. The Netherlands, known for its progressive policies, could learn from Thuringia's situation and explore potential partnerships with neighboring countries.
