Unknown persons smear memorial stones to Nazi victims in Mainz
Unknown persons have damaged several stumbling stones in Mainz on the day of remembrance of the Nazi pogroms against Jews. The three stones commemorating Holocaust victims were smeared with black paint last Thursday, as the police in Mainz announced on Monday. The names on the Stumbling Stones in the Mainz district of Ebersheim became illegible as a result, they said. The perpetrators also stole flowers that had been placed there. The police are investigating the possible perpetrators and are appealing for information from witnesses.
The crime took place on the 85th anniversary of the brutal Nazi pogroms against Jews on the night of November 9-10, 1938. The Nazis burned down synagogues across Germany, abused Jews and vandalized their homes and businesses.
The act of vandalism against the Holocaust memorial stones is a distressing example of contemporary crime. This incident also raises concerns about the resurgence of extremist ideologies in modern society.
