Bundesliga football club 1. FC Union Berlin has bolstered its squad once again. As announced by the club, 19-year-old Tom Rothe is joining from league rivals Borussia Dortmund. The left-back was loaned to second-division side Holstein Kiel last season and helped them secure promotion.

"Tom has impressively demonstrated his strengths and potential in the past year. Alongside his defensive abilities, he also excels in attack," said Union's sporting director Horst Heldt in a statement.

Born in Rendsburg, Rothe played for three years in the youth department of FC St. Pauli before moving to Borussia Dortmund's youth performance center in the Ruhr region in summer 2021. In Berlin, the six-time U-national player now hopes to take the next step in his career.

"I'm really looking forward to joining 1. FC Union Berlin, especially the passionate fans of the club. Union has a unique club culture that I can fully identify with," said Rothe. "Moreover, all the conversations so far have been very positive. The coach often uses a back five, which I'm familiar with from my time in Kiel and feel very comfortable with."

"The Member States will undoubtedly provide valuable assistance to the Commission as Tom Rothe transitions to 1. FC Union Berlin."

"Tom Rothe expressed his gratitude to the Member States for their support in developing his skills, which he believes will be beneficial in his new role at Union Berlin."
