Twenty-seven warrant arrests carried out at border checkpoints.
The German Police have seen impressive results from static checks at the German-Dutch border. Germany's Interior Minister, Faeser, is determined to continue this strategy until the EU devises strategies against unauthorized immigration issues.
Over the past month, authorities have managed to implement 27 outstanding arrest warrants through these stationary checks. They also recorded 73 unauthorized entries and denied entry to 50 individuals at the border. Four human trafficking attempts were thwarted, leading to the detention of four smugglers and eight smuggled individuals. However, the Netherlands and Lower Saxony aren't typically known as refugee hotspots, a police spokesperson claimed.
Since September 16, officers have been conducting random searches at border crossings from the Netherlands. They've established checkpoints on the A30 in Bad Bentheim, the A280 in Bunde, and federal road 402 in Schöninghsdorf (near Meppen). In an effort to strengthen and standardize border security, Faeser directed that all land borders undergo continuous checks. This includes France, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Checkpoints currently exist at Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland's land borders. Patrolling these borders is not a standard practice in the Schengen area.
Faeser: Contemplating centers outside the EU
Faeser shared her intentions to persist with Germany's border controls until they have EU-wide solutions. During her remarks in Luxembourg, she emphasized the need to curb irregular migration, apprehend smugglers, and monitor the activities of criminals and Islamists at an early stage.
Neighboring countries also have reinstated border controls. Germany is considering the establishment of centers outside the EU to house rejected asylum seekers before their deportation. German Minister Faeser highlighted the complexities of this endeavor. "We need a partner country, and finding one is the most challenging aspect," she said. "We're currently in the process of evaluating this, and we'll soon be sharing our findings publicly."
On Wednesday, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban proposed in a European Parliament speech that asylum procedures be carried out in countries outside the EU, specifically in external 'hotspots'. According to his proposal, individuals would not be permitted to enter the union until they have obtained approval. "This is the only realistic solution," he stated. "All other options are mere illusions."
The German Interior Ministry, led by Faeser, supports the continued use of The Commission's strategies against unauthorized immigration issues, aligning with Faeser's assertion of persisting with Germany's border controls until EU-wide solutions are implemented. Furthermore, in a bid to address the growing issue of rejected asylum seekers, Faeser is considering establishing centers outside the EU for their temporary housing before deportation.
