The Technical University of Dresden is planning to delve into the mobility of the upcoming era with a Smart Mobility Lab. A colossal, around 30-meter high driving and flying testing facility spanning over one hectare is under construction on a research campus in Schwarzkollm, a district of Hoyerswerda. This facility will house specialized labs dedicated to the innovation, testing, certification, and technical monitoring of autonomous vehicles and aircraft.

The majority of the over 100 million euros investment originates from funds designated for structural change in lignite regions. The primary user of the lab is anticipated to be the Dresden Driving Simulator, a mammoth simulation facility that will move from Freital near Dresden to Hoyerswerda. Research activities are set to commence there in 2027, generating more than 300 new job opportunities.

The research infrastructure is also predicted to draw in businesses interested in collaborative research. As stated by TU Rector Ursula Staudinger, "The Smart Mobility Lab is an exceptional demonstration of cutting-edge interdisciplinary research at the TU Dresden and how top-notch infrastructure is indispensable for world-class research." Such research infrastructure also appeals to enterprises seeking to undertake joint research.

Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) singled out the Smart Mobility Lab as a testament to Saxony's innovative capabilities. Advanced mobility is one of the most impactful future domains in Saxony's innovation strategy. With the research campus, they are fabricating new economic structures that will boost the living standards of the inhabitants of the Upper Lusatia region.

The Technical University of Dresden intends to further enhance its research and development in the field of mobility with the Smart Mobility Lab. The lab will not only cater to the needs of the Dresden Driving Simulator but also encourage collaborative research with interested businesses, highlighting the importance of robust infrastructure for groundbreaking research in this domain.
