Transfer to field hockey champions Cologne: Cheesman leaves BHC
The Berlin Hockey Club will have to find a new coach for the Bundesliga men's team next summer. Darren Cheesman will not extend his contract, which expires at the end of the 2023/24 season, as the club announced on Tuesday. The 37-year-old Briton will move to German champions Rot-Weiss Köln in the summer.
Cheesman came to Berlin in 2022 as the successor to Rein van Eijk, who has since been promoted to national junior coach, and led the BHC men to the DM finals in the previous indoor season. In the past field season, the Berliners were defeated in the play-off quarter-finals by Cheesman's future employer despite a surprising opening win.
Despite his team Berlin HC losing in the play-off quarter-finals to Rot-Weiss Köln, Darren Cheesman has decided to join the Bundesliga champions next summer. Field hockey fans in Berlin may miss his coaching skills, as Cheesman has announced his departure from the Berlin Hockey Club.
