More than 13 years ago, Maria Höfl-Riesch (39) and Marcus Höfl (50) exchanged their vows, but just a few days ago, the former ski racers and their manager announced that they would be going their separate ways in their private lives. Höfl-Riesch spoke with the magazine "Gala" a week after the announcement about the end of their marriage.

The athlete seems to be coping as well as can be expected. "It's tough, but of course I'm very sad. A separation is always painful, but these things happen," says Höfl-Riesch. The 39-year-old emphasized that a loving and respectful separation was important to her: "We had such a wonderful time together, so we're parting as friends. We won't be a married couple anymore, but we'll always be friends." Moreover, Höfl will continue to manage her.
The former couple had been gradually drifting apart, with no specific trigger for the separation, according to the three-time Olympic champion. She plans to take some time for herself now, "clear her head and focus on herself for a while."

"Unfortunately, our lives have developed in different directions, but we will remain connected both professionally and friendship-wise."
