- The Oelsnitz Coal World Museum undergoes renovations, set to reopen in October
Following a five-year overhaul, the "CoalWorld - Museum of Coal Mining in Saxony" situated in Oelsnitz is now in its best shape. At a recent event held on a Sunday, the Erzgebirgskreis, which manages the museum, offered a glimpse into the expanded exhibition spanning over 2,500 square meters. This grand event is set to take place on October 26, as revealed by the museum's director, Jan Färber.
The museum's renovation, located in a vintage coal mine building, came at a hefty price of approximately 30 million euros. This amount was significantly higher than the initial budget of around 18 million euros due to escalating construction costs and unforeseen challenges encountered during the historical building's reconstruction.
New-age tech and seamless design
As per Färber, the overhaul involved installing modern ventilation systems, upgrading electronics, and constructing stairs to interconnect various exhibition zones. The expanded exhibition will house approximately 450 items from the collection of around 60,000 relics. The Free State of Saxony is contributing around 2.9 million euros towards exhibiting the history of hard coal mining in Saxony and coal in general. Moreover, a glass staircase will permit revisiting the closed-since-2015 historical hoist tower, offering a breathtaking panoramic view from above.
