The Greens' supporters attacked in Brandenburg
The police in Brandenburg are recording an increasing number of attacks on politicians. In addition, in the super election year, posters are being defaced and destroyed. Now, a volunteer of the Greens has been targeted. The district board condemns the "cowardly attack".
A volunteer of the Greens in Brandenburg was attacked and robbed. The state protection department responsible for politically motivated crimes has taken over the investigation, as a spokesperson for the Oberhavel police inspection said. According to the police, the attack occurred in the morning around 11:30 a.m. in Hohen Neuendorf north of Berlin, while the volunteer was distributing flyers for the Greens. A man unknown at this time approached him and expressed his displeasure. According to the police, an argument ensued between the two men. The perpetrator pushed the 68-year-old volunteer to the ground and snatched the bag with the flyers. Then, according to the police, he fled. The 68-year-old was slightly injured.
Anne Schumacher, spokesperson for the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen district board, expressed her shock. "We as Bündnis 90/Die Grünen condemn this cowardly attack in the strongest terms," the MAZ quoted Schumacher. "Violence against politically active people is never justified and absolutely unacceptable."
Recently, a racist attack on the CDU politician Adeline Abimnwi Awemo during the state election campaign made headlines. Awemo was racially insulted and attacked while putting up her election posters in Cottbus. The politician, born in Cameroon, has lived in Cottbus for more than 20 years and has German citizenship.
Police record more attacks
The police in Brandenburg have recorded significantly more attacks on politicians in the super election year. From January to March of this year, there were 75 politically motivated crimes against elected officials, officials, and party representatives, as shown in the response from the Ministry of the Interior to inquiries from the Left party's Andrea Johlige.
This is an increase of more than a third compared to the first three months of last year, when the police recorded 55 attacks and other crimes against politicians in Brandenburg.
