- The Gorch Fock is heading for Rostock.
The German Navy's sail training ship, the "Gorch Fock", is expected as a guest for the third consecutive year at the Hanse Sail in Rostock today (10:00 AM). The 33rd edition of the maritime festival will be opened on Thursday by Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) in Warnemünde, where the "Gorch Fock" will be moored at the central mole. The ship is coming from Kiel and will stay until Sunday.
The "Gorch Fock" is a bark and this year, at nearly 90 meters in length, it is the largest traditional sailing ship at the event. Commissioned by the Navy in 1958, the ship has 23 sails with a total area of around 1,800 square meters and can accommodate approximately 140 cadets as course participants. The commanding officer is Frigate Captain Elmar Bornkessel, who took over the position from Captain Andreas-Peter Graf von Kielmansegg in July.
During the 33rd Hanse Sail, the "Gorch Fock" will also participate in The People's Festival, showcasing its grandeur and tradition. Visitors of The People's Festival will have the opportunity to explore the "Gorch Fock," the largest traditional sailing ship at the event, boasting nearly 90 meters in length.
