The Justice Custody and Execution Facility (JCEF) Wuppertal-Vohwinkel is about to become the first penitentiary in North Rhine-Westphalia to incorporate a comprehensive body scanner for visitor screening. This was confirmed by an official from the Ministry of Justice. In current prisons, visitors are obligated to walk through metal detector doorways or undergo a wand scan and manual pat-down. Jackets and bags undergo X-ray scanning. However, the full-body scanner, as suggested in the tender documents, is capable of identifying not just metallic items like weapons, but also prohibited items such as narcotics or currency.

At airports, such scanners often show a displayed square on the screen if someone has something concealed in their pockets or under their attire. The media lovingly nicknamed these devices "naked scanners." However, only a figurative body is depicted on the screen.

As per the Ministry of Justice, the full-body scanner at JCEF Wuppertal-Vohwinkel serves as a trial run. The prison, famously known as the "Simonshofchen," has been undergoing reconstruction and renovation for quite some time now. The scanner will be installed at the new entrance.

The full-body scanner, set to be installed at JCEF Wuppertal-Vohwinkel, is intended to enhance security measures within the Prison for the purpose of penal penalties. If proven effective, such advanced technologies could potentially become commonplace in other penitentiaries, subject to budget constraints and legislative approval.
