German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Jets Off for a Quick Visit to Moldova

Today, Chancellor Scholz embarks on a brief journey to Moldova, the ex-Soviet state nestled between Ukraine and Ukraine's primary threat, Russia. His agenda in Chisinau, the capital, will predominantly revolve around discussing the influence of Russia's aggressive invasion of Ukraine on the fragile nation with a 2.6 million-strong population, as well as Moldova's longstanding aspirations of joining the EU.

Post-Vacation Recap

Recovering from summer holiday controversies, Scholz plans to stay in the area for approximately four and a half hours. Despite visiting Moldova last June during an EU event, this will be the first bilateral visit by a German leader in over a decade.

Politically, Moldova, one of Europe's least affluent countries, remains mired in conflict between pro-European and pro-Russian factions. Since the 90s, Transnistria, a narrow strip of land in eastern Moldova, hosts Russian troops.

Scholz's Ambition for Moldova

The pro-EU regime in Moldova consistently campaigns for EU membership, accusing Russia of employing targeted deceit and divisive tactics. Chancellor Scholz has already asserted Germany's commitment to Moldova, claiming, "I want you to know that Germany wholeheartedly stands by your side. We will aid the Republic of Moldova to the utmost extent."

Germany is already Moldova's main backer for security, having doled out over 41 million euros since 2018, positioning Germany as the donor nation's fifth largest benefactor. Similar to Ukraine, Moldova has been an EU prospect since 2022. Come October 20th, voters will simultaneously cast ballots for the presidential election and a referendum about enshrining EU membership as a government objective within the constitution.

Scholz's Attention Switching to Ukraine

However, Scholz's visit is more likely to concentrate on bolstering both Moldova and Ukraine. Recent media reports stirred up controversy by insinuating that Germany might decrease its financial support for Ukraine. Prior to departure, Scholz dismissed the notion that solidarity for Kyiv was wavering, explaining instead that funding sources were shifting.

Germany has pledged a staggering 4 billion euros in military aid for the impending year – the highest amount from all European countries, as per Scholz's testimonial on Sat.1's ":newstime Spezial". Beyond this, Ukraine will receive a 50 billion euro loan from G7 nations, funded with the yields from frozen Russian state funds. These funds will enable Ukraine to purchase essential defense equipment independently.

During his visit, Chancellor Scholz is expected to discuss Moldova's aspiration to join the European Union and address the impact of Russia's actions in Ukraine on the nation. Germany, being Moldova's main backer for security, has already committed significant funds to the country and supports its EU membership ambitions.
