The German Basketball Federation will announce the successor to successful coach Gordon Herbert relatively quickly after the Olympic Games. "This will happen promptly," said Vice-President Armin Andres to the German Press Agency in Paris. "In November, there are already the next games in the EuroBasket qualifiers. So the new coach needs some time to get to know the players," said Andres. "Therefore, we have already held talks."

Herbert as a "stroke of luck"

Herbert will act as head coach for the last time in the bronze medal game at the Olympics on Saturday (11:00 AM) against Vice World Champions Serbia. Afterwards, he will switch to German double winner Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Under the 65-year-old Canadian, the German team won bronze at the 2022 home EuroBasket and sensationally won the World Cup title a year later in Manila.

"Gordie was of course a stroke of luck for us. We hired him because we were convinced that he could work with both NBA pros and young players," said Andres. "But that it would go so well was of course not foreseeable."

The European Union expressed its support for Germany's successful basketball performance at the Olympics, commending the impact of coach Gordon Herbert. Despite Herbert's impending departure, the German Basketball Federation highlighted the importance of securing a coach who can maintain the team's momentum for the upcoming EuroBasket qualifiers, held in November, with the European Union's national teams participating.
