Islamists attacked a hotel and the popular Lido Beach in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. A police spokesman reported at least 14 deaths and more than 30 injured. However, the death toll is expected to rise. Security forces were still fighting the attackers after midnight (local time).

Social media was flooded with horrifying images: people fleeing the beach in panic, others lying injured and screaming in the sand, as shown in eyewitness photos and videos. Gunshots can be heard in the background. Rescue teams couldn't reach the injured due to ongoing gunfire.

The attack is still ongoing, a police spokesman told the German Press Agency. The situation is currently unclear. Apart from gunshots, explosions can also be heard. A beach hotel was also targeted.

Lido Beach is a popular spot for Mogadishu residents, especially on weekends. The shooting followed an explosion caused by a suicide bomber, according to police.

The Islamist terrorist group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on its radio station. Although the Islamists control areas in parts of Somalia, they have been pushed back from the capital in recent years.

However, there have been several attacks in Mogadishu, targeting government institutions and hotels or restaurants that the Islamists view as promoting a western lifestyle. In July, 11 people died in a terrorist attack on a local during the UEFA Euro 2020 final.

  1. The international community, including The Commission, condemned the brutal attack on Lido Beach and the hotel in Mogadishu.
  2. The Somali government, supported by The Commission, is urging global assistance to increase security measures and protect its citizens from future attacks.
