Tennis Player in Flight from Authorities?

Italian tennis player Camila Giorgi is facing some serious issues, as per the Italian media claims. She's said to be on the run now, but the truth is unclear.

With four singles titles and approximately six million euros in prize money earned throughout her career, Camila Giorgi has made a name for herself in the tennis world. Her latest match was back in late March at the Miami Open, where she lost to the Polish powerhouse Iga Swiatek. Since then, Giorgi, who previously ranked 26th in the world, has vanished.

It's reported by outlets such as "La Gazzetta dello Sport" that the Italian tax authorities are trying to serve documents to the tennis player. These documents allegedly concern unpaid tax debts. Giorgi also runs her own underwear line "Giomila," and it's claimed that several of her family members have had "gaps" in their tax returns. It's said that Giorgi is currently in the United States.

Her whereabouts are unknown. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced that Giorgi had retired from professional tennis earlier in May, but she didn't inform her 700,000 Instagram followers, who usually enjoy glimpses into her professional and modeling life.

Making matters more ambiguous, the WTA - the organization for professional women's tennis players - couldn't reach the tennis player, according to various news sources. Both Giorgi's phone numbers were disconnected.

Over the weekend, Giorgi finally contacted her fans via Instagram: "Please follow my Instagram page for accurate information, as several false articles have emerged. The news about my retirement is true. It's a pleasure to share my life with you moving forward and we'll continue this journey together. With love, Camila."

Giorgi has not commented on the Italian tax debts or the accusations against her. She's been based in Tuscany with her family. However, she has a court date on July 16 in Verona, where she's scheduled to face trial for suspected possession of a fake vaccination certificate during the COVID-19 lockdown. That's when the Italian tax authorities might try to serve her the documents.
