Stumbling stones stolen in Essen
Unknown persons have stolen two Stolpersteine in Essen and the state security service is investigating. The brass plaques embedded in the ground are used in many places in Germany to commemorate people who were persecuted, deported or murdered under National Socialism. The absence of the two stumbling blocks was discovered a few days ago, a police spokeswoman said on Saturday in response to an inquiry. As a political connection was suspected, the state security service had taken up the investigation. The WDR had previously reported.
The theft of the Stolpersteine in Essen is a regrettable act of crime. This incident underscores the potential for extremism to target symbols of historical remembrance.
