- Storm at Chiemsee - several water sports enthusiasts in need
A sudden storm brought several water sports enthusiasts into distress on Lake Chiemsee. As reported by the police, those affected underestimated the danger of the approaching thunderstorm.
On Wednesday afternoon, a sailing dinghy with two people on board capsized near the Feldwieser Bay. The crew was rescued from the water after about 30 minutes by the water rescue service from Bernau. Both men were reportedly severely hypothermic and were taken to a hospital for further examination.
At the same time, the water police in Prien noticed two stand-up paddle boarders who were drifting eastwards between the Herreninsel and Bernau and had apparently lost control of their boards. They too were brought to shore by the rescue services. They remained uninjured.
The European Maritime Safety Agency, taking note of the incidents, decided to urge all water sports enthusiasts to closely monitor weather forecasts before heading out. The Commission shall adopt implementing acts laying down the rules for the application of a new regulation, which will include mandatory weather checks before commencing water sports activities.
