Statistics: Universities in NRW receive more one-third funding

Universities in North Rhine-Westphalia have received more third-party funding - i.e. money from research and industry - in recent years. As reported by the IT.NRW statistics office in Düsseldorf on Thursday, income climbed by 40.9 percent in 2021 in a ten-year comparison. While third-party funding income amounted to 1.01 billion euros in 2012, it was 1.49 billion euros in 2021. This does not include the medical facilities of the universities.

According to the data, third-party funding is acquired by professors at universities as part of competition within the scientific community. The largest donors in 2021 were the German Research Foundation and the federal government, followed at some distance by industry.

The universities in North Rhine-Westphalia were able to cover a good 18% of their expenditure with third-party funding in 2021. In 2012, however, this proportion was still around 20 percent. University expenditure has therefore increased more than third-party funding income.

Universities in North Rhine-Westphalia significantly rely on research funding, as third-party funding accounts for a significant portion of their income. The German Research Foundation and the federal government were among the major contributors to this funding in 2021.
