Residents of Schleswig-Holstein earned and took home more in 2020 than the previous year. Their income increased by 1.9 percent to 43,600 euros, according to surveys by the North Statistics Office. The data is based on 1.48 million wage and income taxpayers in the state.

People around Hamburg and Kiel earned and generated the most money. However, it's notable that the independent cities of Kiel, Lübeck, Neumünster, and Flensburg had the lowest average incomes, ranging from 33,900 euros in Flensburg to 38,200 euros in Lübeck.

Where the most is earned

The highest wages and incomes were in the Stormarn district, averaging 51,500 euros. Following were the Pinneberg district with 47,500 euros, and the Rendsburg-Eckernförde and Herzogtum Lauenburg districts, each with 46,600 euros.

At the municipal level, the differences were even greater. In twelve communities, the average was more than 100,000 euros. Leading the way was Kampen on Sylt with 243,100 euros, followed by Strande near Kiel with 162,700 euros. The twelve communities with the lowest values had an average income below 32,600 euros.

Since some taxpayers had very high incomes, two-thirds (68 percent) of them were below the average income of 43,600 euros for Schleswig-Holstein.

The increase in income for Schleswig-Holstein residents in 2020 represents a significant comparison with the previous year, showing an improvement of 1.9%. Regardless of this, two-thirds of the state's wage and income taxpayers still earn below the average income of 43,600 euros.
