State security investigates yellow star on the street
Following the discovery of a symbol reminiscent of a Star of David on a street in Sondershausen, the state security service is investigating. A police spokeswoman said on Thursday when asked whether there was a connection with the name Anne Frank of a nearby kindergarten. Unknown persons had sprayed the star in yellow paint on the road between Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon, police officers discovered it during a patrol. According to the police, it has already been removed. The MDR reported on the involvement of the state security service. The police initially spoke of damage to property on Wednesday.
Investigations are being conducted in all directions, the spokeswoman said. The yellow Star of David was imposed on Jews under National Socialism as a sign of their complete disenfranchisement; they had to wear it on their clothing. The Jewish girl Anne Frank (1929-1945) was a victim of the Holocaust.
After the Nazis came to power, her family fled from Frankfurt am Main to the Netherlands, where she went into hiding. It was in hiding that she wrote her moving "Diary of Anne Frank", which has been translated into 70 languages. Anne Frank died at the age of 15 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
An exhibition about Anne Frank was due to open at the Sondershausen Castle Museum on Thursday. Most recently, the planned renaming of an Anne Frank kindergarten in Tangerhütte (Saxony-Anhalt) also caused international criticism.
The discovery of the yellow star has sparked concerns about potential extremism in the area. This incident serves as a chilling reminder of past crimes against the Jewish community.
