Sole Exclusive: Attorney Mathew Rosengart Ends Representation of Britney Spears Post Litigation Closure on Conservatorship Case

Britney Spears' legal representative, Mathew Rosengart, has stepped down following the resolution of all legal matters connected to her former conservatorship. This move effectively returns Spears' independence and frees her from probate system oversight.

Two months ago, under Rosengart's leadership, Spears reached a deal with her controversial father, bypassing an anticipated trial and ending their prolonged argument over fiscal disputes that persisted even after the conservatorship's termination in November 2021.

With the settlement in place and all remaining Spears-related litigation issues addressed, Rosengart, based in LA and a partner at Greenberg Traurig, plans to shift his focus to a heavy workload of client cases.

At the time of the settlement, Rosengart told CNN that he was proud to represent and protect Britney Spears, praising her as an "iconic and extraordinarily talented artist."

Rosengart did not comment on the end of his professional relationship with Spears following CNN's request for a statement.

Spears enlisted Rosengart - a former federal prosecutor - in the summer of 2021, after working primarily with a court-appointed counsel for most of her 13-year conservatorship period.

Rosengart played a pivotal role in Spears' quest to abolish her conservatorship, earning high praises from Spears, who credited him for safeguarding her rights and restoring her civil liberties. Spears' father, Jamie Spears, held the position as the singer's conservator for much of its duration, managing her finances and medical decisions.

In June 2021, Spears delivered emotional testimony in court, urging the judge to release her from the conservatorship, which she described as "abusive."

"I just want my life back. It’s been thirteen years and it’s enough," Spears told the judge, accusing her management and father of forcing her on tour despite her wishes, restricting her from consuming coffee, medication that made her feel intoxicated, preventing her from marrying or having a child, and more.

After only two months of working with Rosengart, the court instituted a temporary suspension of Spears' father as her conservator, and subsequently terminated the conservatorship altogether.

Rosengart, who has also defended various Hollywood celebrities such as Sean Penn and Steven Spielberg, became a cherished hero among #FreeBritney supporters, and a significant figure throughout the legal ordeal. As the media frenzy surrounding Spears' case grew, Rosengart gained notoriety on social media, coined as "RosenGod" by some fans.

Spears and Rosengart share a close bond that deviates from conventional attorney-client relationships.

When Spears hired Rosengart in July 2021, she excitedly announced on Instagram, "Now with real representation, I feel gratitude and blessed." In February 2022, the star posted a photo of the two dressed in matching pink ensembles, saying, "This man has turned my life around."

In her memoir, "The Woman in Me," published in the previous year, Spears attributed her court triumph to Rosengart's legal approach, writing, "He told me that I deserved the credit for what happened."

Following the termination of her conservatorship, Spears has published her memoir, released two singles - "Hold Me Closer" with Elton John and "Mind Your Business" with will.i.am - gotten married and divorced to fitness trainer and actor Sam Asghari, and continues living her life freely.

Throughout the lengthy legal struggle, accusations ranging from financial misappropriation to misuse of conservatorship duties were made against Spears' father. Despite these allegations, the elder Spears has always maintained his innocence and emphasized that the court supported every action taken during the conservatorship. When Spears settled with her father this past April, his attorney, Alex Weingarten, stated that he desired a trial to reveal the truth.

"Jamie would gladly disclose all the details but unfortunately, that is not possible," Spears' father's attorney said, adding that he cares deeply for his daughter and tirelessly fought to safeguard her interests.

Despite the settlement, Spears wished to conclude her longstanding legal battle peacefully.

"As my client desired, her freedom now includes that she will no longer need to participate in court proceedings related to this matter," Rosengart stated to CNN in April.

"Although the conservatorship ended in November 2021, her pursuit of freedom is now truly accomplished," he added.
