Jamie Lee Curtis (65) is now Doctor Jamie Lee Curtis: The American Film Institute has awarded the US actress an honorary doctorate. At the event on August 10 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Curtis was also the keynote speaker.

"I'm an Underachiever"

"I shouldn't be here if you look at my resume," the 65-year-old said, according to "Variety" in her speech. "I'm an underachiever who's just been given this incredible honor." A humble self-assessment indeed, as Curtis, who won her first Oscar in 2023 for "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and has received numerous other awards, is one of Hollywood's most famous actresses. Her filmography includes the "Halloween" series, "Freaky Friday" (2003), "Knives Out" (2019), or "A Fish Called Wanda" (1988).

Curtis continued: "I'm the embodiment of the underachiever who made it for you graduates. I'm an artist, I can say that today. I couldn't say that when I was 19 and didn't know what I wanted to do." She became an actress by chance, and her parents also got into acting by chance. She advised the graduates to "remain open, free, engaged, and absolutely enthusiastic. Don't get complacent. Don't think you deserve more than you get. Fight for it, work for it. Save the universe, please. God bless you all, thank you."

"This honorary Doctorate infilm studies is beyond what I ever expected, considering my self-proclaimed status as an 'underachiever' in my career.""Being awarded an Honorary Doctorate today serves as a testament to the fact that sometimes, success in art and films comes to those who remain open, unassuming, and passionate, much like myself."
