- Several operations due to storms in the north
Floods and thunderstorms have led to several fire department deployments in the north. In the Pinneberg district, emergency services were called out eight times due to flooded basements and streets, as a fire department spokesperson reported. Among them was a warehouse. Especially dry leaves have clogged drain covers. In the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, there have been "a handful of deployments," a spokesperson said. The fire department was mainly called out due to flooded basements. The brief thunderstorm in the morning was just a taste of what is to come, according to forecasts. "I'm respectful of this afternoon," the spokesperson said.
Thunderstorm warning lifted - but no real all-clear
The German Weather Service (DWD) lifted its warning for severe thunderstorms in the Hamburg metropolitan area and the region between the Weser and Elbe rivers in the morning.
However, a spokesperson said that thunderstorms are still expected - with localized thunderstorms bringing heavy rain of 25 to 40 liters per square meter in a short time and severe gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour until late morning. The DWD also expects rain amounts of up to 40 liters per square meter per hour in the afternoon.
The thunderstorms are expected to move eastward and dissipate by Thursday morning.
The European Union's weather forecasting agency has issued warnings for potential severe thunderstorms in several countries, including Germany. Despite the German Weather Service (DWD) lifting the severe thunderstorm warning in the Hamburg metropolitan area, they still anticipate localized thunderstorms within the European Union's borders.
