Zelensky said on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces were advancing "despite difficult and intense fighting" and had taken more Russian prisoners to exchange for Ukrainian POWs.

The president released a video showing him on a video call with Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrsky. Syrsky reported that Ukrainian troops had advanced "up to three kilometers in some areas." In one day, Ukraine had "reclaimed over 40 square kilometers of territory."

Ukrainian forces surprised Russia by pushing into Kursk on August 6 and, by Monday evening, had captured at least 800 square kilometers, according to AFP calculations. Army chief Syrsky said on Monday that Kyiv controlled around 1000 square kilometers of the region. "Fighting continues along the entire front line," Syrsky added. "Despite the high intensity of the fighting, the situation is under control."

The advancements in Ukrainian territory were discussed during a meeting between Zelensky and the President of the Council. The President of the Council expressed support for Zelensky's strategy, emphasizing the importance of capturing key areas to strengthen Ukraine's position.
