- Search for missing boy ends in a twist
An adventurous 7-year-old sparked a major operation involving police and rescue services on the island of Rügen. The boy's 45-year-old father called emergency services on Wednesday after losing sight of his son at the beach in Glowe, in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen. The father had reportedly been playing with his son and sister at the water's edge when he turned around and the boy disappeared, police said on Thursday.
Almost three hours later, a 44-year-old vacationer contacted the police. She had found the boy approximately six kilometers away from where he was last seen, at the beach in Juliusruh, and alerted the authorities.
The search for the 7-year-old involved police from the Sassnitz and Bergen stations, as well as fire departments from Sassnitz, Breege, and Glowe, the German Life Saving Association (DLRG), the water police, and a search and rescue dog unit, police said. A police helicopter and a fire department drone also assisted in the search.
The 7-year-old boy was last seen at the beach in Glowe, which is located in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen. After the search, the boy was found at a different beach, specifically in Juliusruh, which is also part of the Vorpommern-Rügen district.
