Scholz and Starmer aim to revive German-British relations through the signing of a new treaty.
Concurrently with the joint press conference held by Scholz and Starmer, both governments issued a joint declaration. This declaration indicated that the ongoing bilateral cooperation agreement should be finalized at the start of the upcoming year. To facilitate this, consultations between the governments will be conducted. With this agreement, the governments in Berlin and London aim to address the "concerns facing our two nations" and elevate their relationship to a higher level, as stated in the declaration.
During the press conference at the Berlin Chancellery, Scholz highlighted the robust and long-lasting partnership between Germany and the United Kingdom, characterized by shared beliefs and enduring camaraderie. He expressed his commitment to fostering this cooperation for the benefit of their people, Europe, and the transatlantic region's security.
Starmer, in turn, underlined that a new era in British-German relations was commencing. He emphasized that the core of the contract was a revised defense agreement. Besides this, they would collaborate more closely on aspects such as tackling illegal immigration and climate change.
Scholz commented that such an agreement had never been in place before. While welcoming Starmer's intention to renew relations with the EU, he stated, "We are eager to seize this opportunity." He further highlighted the UK's significance as a vital player in addressing Europe's major challenges.
In the joint statement, it was clarified that Germany and the United Kingdom shared a deep friendship and common interests. According to the statement, the agreement would reflect their role as closely connected partners in Europe, with the greatest possible bilateral cooperation in areas vital to their citizens.
The statement explicitly outlined "political cooperation for peace and security, the growth of our economies," as well as "industrial transformation." Besides this, Germany and the United Kingdom agreed to collaborate more closely in combating irregular migration and law enforcement. The contract would also consider areas such as youth and education, energy security, climate and environmental policy, development cooperation, transport, and technology, research, and innovation.
The joint statement also highlighted their united support for Ukraine, which is currently under attack by Russia. It stated, "We are resolute in our determination to deter a more aggressive Russia, maintain our support for Ukraine, and strengthen European defense." Through their military cooperation, Germany and the United Kingdom aim to ensure that their deterrence and defense capabilities in the Euro-Atlantic region remain credible against any potential threat and enemy.
Upon Starmer's arrival, Scholz greeted him with military honors. Previously, the British Prime Minister had been received by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Schloss Bellevue. This was the first visit by the British head of government to Germany since he assumed office in early July.
After finalizing the bilateral cooperation agreement at the start of the new year, both governments will closely review and sign the contract. The comprehensive contract, encompassing areas such as defense, economy, and climate change, will reinforce the strong partnership between Germany and the United Kingdom.
