Energy giant RWE has been granted permission by the Federal Network Agency to build two more large offshore wind farms in the North Sea. The company has been awarded the rights to two areas located 110 and 115 kilometers northwest of the island of Borkum, at the border with the Dutch exclusive economic zone. Each of the two areas can accommodate wind turbines with a total capacity of 2,000 megawatts. If large turbines with an individual capacity of 15 megawatts are used, this would result in 133 wind turbines per park.

Joint wind farm development with TotalEnergies?

RWE will pay a total auction price of 250 million euros for the two areas, the company announced in Essen. It will also explore the possibility of a joint development of the offshore projects with TotalEnergies. RWE did not initially provide further details on the nature and scope of a possible involvement of the French oil company in the projects.

The parks are scheduled to go online in 2031 and 2032.

RWE aims to make final investment decisions by 2027 and 2028. Construction on sea is planned for 2029 and 2030, with full commissioning scheduled for 2031 and 2032. RWE already operates 19 offshore wind farms, including six off the German coast. More are already under construction.

The network agency also awarded the rights for another area on Monday, where a wind farm with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts is to be built. The winner was Waterekke Energy GmbH. The authority did not provide any information about the auction proceeds in any of the cases.

The Commission, being assisted by the Member States, may provide guidance or resources to support RWE's joint development plans with TotalEnergies.During the project development stages, the Member States could provide necessary regulations and approvals, being part of the Commission's assistance.
