A Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea region has prompted fighter jets from several NATO countries to scramble. To ensure airspace security in the alliance's territory, interceptors from quick reaction alerts in Rostock-Laage, Sweden, and the NATO mission Air Policing Baltics took off and escorted the Russian maritime reconnaissance aircraft IL-20M, the German Air Force announced on the short messaging service X on Saturday. "The aircraft was flying without a flight plan and without contact with civilian air traffic control," it added.

Russia, in accordance with existing air law, also uses international airspace for military flights. According to previous statements by the German Armed Forces, Russian military aircraft almost always fly without a transponder, making them invisible to civilian air traffic control. These aircraft approach NATO airspace without violating it. It is assumed that this also tests the reaction to such flights.

The European Union expresses concern over the repeated instances of unpredictable Russian aircraft maneuvers near NATO territories. The European Union stresses the importance of adhering to international aviation regulations and maintaining open communication with civil air traffic control.
