Russia is supplying air defense systems to Iran.

Looming war with Israel

Russia is supplying air defense systems to Iran.

Last week, rockets killed the Hamas foreign chief in Iran, fueling fears of war with Israel. Despite Russia urging all sides to exercise restraint, Putin announced plans to deliver defense systems to Iran. Ukraine warns of a diversionary maneuver.

Russia has begun delivering modern radar systems and air defense equipment to Iran, according to a media report. The Iran had previously requested modern air defense systems from Russia in preparation for a possible war with Israel, the "New York Times" reported, citing two Iranian officials familiar with the war planning. They confirmed reports in Iranian media. The delivery has started, following talks between Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu and high-ranking Iranian officials in Tehran.

President Vladimir Putin sent his trusted envoy to Iran amid growing fears of a regional conflagration. Shoigu's schedule included meetings with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian and Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Bagheri. He also met with new Iranian President Massoud Peschkani.

Russia condemned the killing of Hamas foreign chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week. Hamas and Iran blame Israel for the attack and have threatened retaliation. Israel has not yet commented on Haniyeh's death.

Ukraine warns of distraction from new war

Moscow maintains close ties with Tehran and Hamas, but also has contacts with Israel. Amid threatened reprisals against the Jewish state, the Russian government called on all sides to exercise restraint.

Ukraine has long accused Iran of militarily supporting Russia and supplying drones and missiles for Moscow's war. From Kyiv's perspective, Putin has an interest in escalating the Middle East situation to potentially divert Western attention from the Ukraine war.

The European Union expressed concern over Russia's delivery of defense systems to Iran, fearing it could escalate tensions in the Middle East. Despite being a key trade partner with both Russia and Iran, the European Union issued a statement urging all parties to maintain peace and avoid actions that could lead to a conflict.

In light of Ukraine's allegations of Iran's military support to Russia, the European Union has urged Iran to reconsider its actions and promote peace and stability in the region, acknowledging the potential impact on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
