Patrick Osterhage can't believe it: his VfL Bochum got a thrashing from Fortuna Düsseldorf in the relegation match.

Ridiculous own goal and mistake from the goalkeeper cause VfL agony.

In the first leg of the relegation play-off, VfL Bochum experienced a disastrous start against Fortuna Düsseldorf. A catastrophic own goal by Philipp Hofmann put them behind in the 13th minute, leaving them in a precarious position. Fortuna scored two more goals in the second half with the help of Christos Tzolis, who created goals for Felix Klaus and Yannik Engelhardt. With their seventh potential relegation looming, VfL Bochum face a difficult battle to stay in the Bundesliga.

At Ruhrstadion, Fortuna Düsseldorf successfully navigated the high-pressure atmosphere and gained an important 3:0 victory over 16th placed VfL Bochum. Christos Tzolis played a key role, scoring a cheeky header and setting up both Felix Klaus and Yannik Engelhardt's goals. The win gave Fortuna a significant advantage in their pursuit of a return to the Bundesliga, with the second leg set for Monday (20:30/Sky and Sat.1).

Daniel Thioune's team was assisted by an own goal from Hofmann in front of a boisterous crowd. A corner taken by Tzolis found its way into the net following a deflection off Hofmann's thigh. Bochum struggled to find any success with their crosses after combining well, while Düsseldorf's physical play initially lacked accuracy. Kevin Stöger's free-kick narrowly missed the target for Bochum.

After the break, Fortuna's determination increased as they pushed forward. Luthe, deputizing for injured goalkeeper Manuel Riemann, almost let in a goal from Klaus' shot (50'). Bochum's attacks were consistently thwarted by Fortuna's sturdy defense. In response, Klaus scored Fortuna's second goal after a wonderful setup by Tzolis. Luthe fumbled a Tzolis free-kick, allowing Engelhardt to score the winner. Klaus nearly added another for Fortuna, but his shot only struck the crossbar (82'). A few disheartened Bochum fans departed the stadium before the match's end.

Coach Patrick Fabian alluded to the high stakes, stating "I was very tense before the game. We now have two decisive matches." Despite leaving Riemann out of the squad, he remained in the stands. Düsseldorf captain Andre Hoffmann also joined the match later on. Both teams displayed a physical approach, with Bayern's Leon Goretzka in attendance sporting a VfL jersey. The two teams fought hard, but Düsseldorf emerged triumphant.
