Redmann: SPD hesitates on measures against irregular migration
The Brandenburg CDU state chairman Jan Redmann has accused the coalition partner SPD under Minister President Dietmar Woidke of hesitating on measures against irregular migration. "Dietmar Woidke has still not clarified the SPD's course on migration policy," Redmann told the German Press Agency on Sunday. "Their hesitation on border controls has wasted valuable time." After the introduction of fixed border controls in mid-October, the number of newly arriving refugees fell significantly. "This could have relieved the burden on local authorities months ago," said Redmann.
Despite the insistence of Brandenburg's Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU), Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) had long refused to register the controls at the German-Polish border. The head of the SPD parliamentary group in the Brandenburg state parliament, Daniel Keller, also doubted that border controls would lead to fewer refugees. On Saturday, the SPD's state party conference then passed a key motion by the executive board welcoming border controls.
On Friday, Redmann was nominated by the state executive of his party as the top candidate for the state list for the state parliamentary elections in September next year. The 43-year-old then announced his ambitions to become head of government. "Brandenburg now needs stability and consistency, but also the ambition to move the state forward," he said. "That's why I want to become Minister President of Brandenburg."
The CDU, led by Jan Redmann in Brandenburg, criticizes the SPD's reluctance to take decisive action on migration policies, specifically border controls. Redmann, the top CDU candidate for the state elections next year, believes that early implementation of border controls could have alleviated the burden on local authorities earlier.
